“Organic agriculture is a system that sustains the health of
soil, ecosystems and people. It relies on ecological processes,
biodiversity and cycles adapted to local conditions, rather than the use
of inputs (chemicals) with adverse effects. Organic agriculture
combines tradition, innovation and science to benefit the shared
environment and promote fair relationships and a good quality of life
for all involved…”
When you use organic you feed the soil. It feeds the microorganisms
in the soil and helps maintain a healthy substrate for earthworms and
other beneficial organisms of the soil. These microorganisms in turn
breakdown the organic fertilizer into elements the plants need such as
nitrogen, Phosphorous, potassium, and other trace elements as well as
aerate the soil.
Synthetic fertilizer can these helpful microorganisms and therefore
destroy the natural balance of your soil. Until the beginning of the 20th century
only organic fertilizers were used. Synthetic fertilizers lead to the
“great dust bowl” in the 1930s. Millions of acres of top soil were blown
away. The top soil becomes striped of nutrients turning it into a
lifeless dust aggravated by drought.
Organic matter, and the organisms that eat it, improve soil
structure, soil health and aid in water retention which in turn support
healthy plant life. The soil needs to be more than just an anchor for
plant roots; it needs to feeds the plant.
Organic feed the soil and let the soil feed the plant, the way Mother Nature intended.
The question should not be “why go Organic,” but rather, “why not?”
